DAY TRIPS FROM STANFORD:
Hermanus
(50km return) - Leave Stanford by going up Queen Victoria road towards the R43. Turn left at the cross roads down the R43 and Hermanus is a scenic 25km away.
Reputed to be the best land based whale watching town in the world, a trip to Hermanus is a must. The whales arrive from about July and depart in October. At the height of the season 100 plus whale are dotted throughout Walker Bay. If you are fortunate you may even see one or two as late as December. Even out of the whale season there is much to do in Hermanus. Go to Hermanus Tourism for more details.
If you feel the need for a swim, Grotto Beach in Hermanus is the place to go. There is a long stretch of sandy beach where you can sit, walk, tan or swim.
After passing two round-a-bouts (circles to South Africans) take a left turn at the Marine Hotel and park on the cliff overlooking the sea. From here you can walk to your left along the cliff path (be aware of not being isolated as muggings have occurred) or to the right to visit the Old Harbour, shops and restaurants. This is also a popular area to see whales in season.
